The new Corolla Hatchback is getting some attention from car enthusiasts as a good, honest, attractive, efficient, and somewhat fun little runabout. But Toyota didn’t want to highlight those aspects and instead decided on this heinous commercial that depicts the Corolla hatch as the car for people who need a well-deserved punch in the face.
And yet, the Spanish-language version of this commercial, while still tragically over-reaching towards advertising agency visions of hip coolness, at least doesn’t have any overt douchebaggery.
Man, I want to punch those people in the English version so bad.

99% of car commercials are stupid

I rarely see commercials since I basically never watch live tv except for the occasional sportsball competition. But this abomination was in rotation during the NBA finals and it struck a nerve with me. Screw these imaginary people.

Sorry Toyota that demographic is owned by BMW!

And yet, I drive a BMW, and this commercial offends my sensibilities.

especially once they are in said car....brings out the fucking worst

Hasn’t Toyota always tried to sell cars to total fucking douchebags? Half the Four Runners and Tacomas in my AO have decals advertising which firearms can be stolen from the glove box. And then we have the holy grail of douchebag ads.

Considering how 99.995% of Corolla drivers around here operate their vehicles, Toyota knows their target market well.

What bothers me is that people care so much about CarPlay that Toyota doesn’t even bother to show their own screen in the ad.

I mean, I get it. Google Maps and Waze are leaps and bounds better than any car’s built-in maps, and nobody really wants to have to stick their phone in some kind of mount to use those maps if they can instead have those same maps show on the car’s built-in screen. I appreciate a good phone dash mount, but I appreciate not having to use a phone mount even more.

Are those kids even grounded to the ground?

I’m just as perturbed by “the youths” as anyone these days. But I do not see anything objectionable in that commercial; just some damn kids that need to stay off my lawn.
We did equally dumb shit when we were less old.

To be clear, the youths, in the real world, don't perturb me at all. The fictional beings depicted in this commercial, on the other hand, are trash.

Companies should just stop offering CarPlay and see how upset people get. Imagine buying a car just because you can plug your phone in (a step backward) to have a simulated iPhone on your screen.

Why? Because they depict the driver speeding? I’m sure you always obey the posted speed limits in you BMW...
They run away from some dogs. Okay? we have no idea why they are running from some aggressive dogs. They could have been out for a walk and the dogs started chasing them. We have no context.
She breaks her arm in the escape. How is this worthy of being face punched? Then they
stage a ‘break out’ of the hospital/healthcare facility so they can go to a party.
Again, not sure how they are trash for anything they do. Toyota isn’t going to risk their reputation by having ads that depict illegal behavior. Apart from the driving quickly around that city, I do not see anything that would make me proclaim these people are trash. And even then, the streets are clearly empty and I am sure there is the usual “Closed course. Professional Driver. Do Not Attempt” disclaimer during that scene.
I think you are perhaps reading far too much into this commercial.
I agree that kids these days are simply horrid. But that’s because I’m old and despise kids for their youth, vitality, and ability to survive on such little sleep.

These aren't real people in the commercial. They're figments of the collective imaginations of Toyota's advertising agency, and they're douches. That is all. No further analysis or meaning intended.

Some aftermarket receivers are now doing wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. But because car companies are such shite at tech, that'll probably show up in another 3-5 years on the OEM side.

I fail to see how the depiction of 20-somethings’ behavior is so offensive to you in particular.
You keep saying how much you hate their actions, yet do not elaborate on why you find their behavior so damning.
![]() 06/19/2019 at 16:37 |

These people don’t exist. An advertising agency made them up. They are fictional and what bugs me is that no real 20somethings are actually like this where they think a fun Saturday night involves doing donuts in a Corolla inside of a warehouse and collecting broken bones and chipped teeth.
![]() 06/19/2019 at 16:43 |

Doing donuts inside an abandoned/empty warehouse actually does sound like fun.
And no one goes out and purposely tries to break their arm or chip a tooth. But those things happen. And what Toyota is selling is the idea their car is there for you to go out and have fun and enjoy what life brings your way.
Again,
I completely fail to see how anything depicted in that ad is in any way trash. It’s just some ad-persons idea of young people being young and doing probably dumb things and living life.
How is this at all any different from the real world?

Only because I watched the ad you posted and had a very different reaction than you and was extremely confused about what you found so offensive.

For aftermarket screens in pre-2010 cars, I think CarPlay is a great idea. My sister’s old Rogue had a system with Android Auto, and though it had a cord, it was a huge jump from no Bluetooth and physical buttons.
